The Vaya Group Introduces the "Ten Commandments of HR"

August 08, 2012

10 inspiring goals for creating talent-rich work environments

According to the 2011 Annual Global CEO Survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers, two-thirds of CEOs believe a limited supply of quality job candidates exists and half are concerned with competitors recruiting current employees. With this added pressure placed on HR executives to find and retain talent, understanding the major goals of human resources is a must. To inspire HR executives to put their best foot forward, The Vaya Group today released the “Ten Commandments of HR.”

“HR professionals lead the way in assessing and strengthening talent within their organizations,” said Dr. Paul Eccher, author and co-founder and principal of The Vaya Group. “At a time when performance can make or break the success of a company, it is vital that HR executives and talent professionals understand how to retain superb employees and attract future leaders. The ‘Ten Commandments of HR’ is a first step in creating a sustainable and thriving work environment.”

The Vaya Group’s “Ten Commandments of HR” include:

  1. Understand your business and its key performance metrics.
  2. Demonstrate leadership by ensuring that senior leaders understand and support talent initiatives.
  3. Create an HR vision with clear strategies that are aligned with and support sustainable business success.
  4. Shape an organization culture that attracts and develops talent.
  5. Become good talent assessors and talent scouts.
  6. Provide learning and development opportunities to close strategic talent gaps.
  7. Create simple and meaningful performance management tools that lead to a feedback-rich and development-focused environment.
  8. Become the best coaches to your business partners.
  9. Collect talent data and demonstrate the business ROI of talent management efforts.
  10. Be experts in conducting and communicating human capital analytics in order to shape successful business and talent strategies.

“The ‘Ten Commandments of HR’ are meant to inspire HR executives as they work to create talent-rich work environments within their companies,” said Dave Ross, co-founder and principal of The Vaya Group. “They should be used as a guide for creating one’s own ‘commandments’ and goals for successful talent development.”

For HR professionals interested in evaluating their talent management tactics and how they align with business metrics, The Vaya Group offers the Talent Optimization Survey. Participants of the survey will receive a “Talent Optimization Report”—based off a poignant study of more than 400 Fortune 1000 companies—which they can use to compare their talent management strategies against organizations in the top and bottom quartile in The Vaya Group’s national database.
